2016 has been a successful year for the movie industry. Titles like “Captain America: Civil War,” “Finding Dory,” and “Zootopia” all earned over $1 billion in worldwide.
Disney has become the first film studio to cross $7 billion at global box office, while 20th Century Fox and Warner Bros also reported good figures.
Here are 10 biggest worldwide box-office earners of 2016.
10. “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” — $675 million worldwide (estimate)
Being a new release, it’s expected that ‘Rogue One’ will only climb higher up the list. It has already earned over $635 worldwide and $400 million in the US.
The latest Star Wars release has dominated the movie industry during the last few weeks of 2016.
9. “Suicide Squad” — $745.6 million
Warner Bras’ DC title received poor reviews, but still made it to the list of top box-office earners of 2016. The movie had the biggest opening weekend of all-time for an August release.
It grossed $363 million in the US.
8. “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” — $746.1 million
The Harry Potter spin-off might not be doing as well as the Potter franchise, but it still has some impressive figures. It’s currently Warner Bros’ third highest earner of the year domestically with $222 million.
7. “Deadpool” — $783.1 million
‘Deadpool’ has been one of the major surprises of 2016 in terms of box-office earnings. 20th Century Fox used clever marketing and unique comic book elements, and thanks to this, ‘Deadpool’ grossed $363 million in the US and nearly $800 million worldwide.
6. “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” — $873.2 million
Warner Bros biggest earner of the year, ‘Dawn of Justice’ had negative critical reception. Despite poor reviews it grossed $330.3 million in the US.
5. “The Secret Life of Pets” — $875.4 million
Animated movies are on the rise, and “The Secret Life of Pets” was a great example of a captivating story perfectly suited for animation. It was Universal’s biggest title of the year with domestic earnings at $368.3 million.
4. “The Jungle Book” — $966.5 million
One of Disney’s heavyweights, ‘The Jungle Book’ is a remaking the classic cartoon of a “man-cub” and his adventures. The movie was a huge success for Disney and it performed strong domestically ($364 million) and even better worldwide.
3. “Zootopia” — $1.023 billion
One of the biggest hits of 2016, ‘Zootopia’ made it on top of the movie lists. The movie made $341.2 million domestically and almost the double worldwide.
2. “Finding Dory” — $1.027 billion
Currently one of the top domestic earners of the year, ‘Finding Dory’ is a long-waited sequel to “Finding Nemo” released back in 2003. Up so far, the Disney/Pixar hit grossed $486.2 million domestically.
1. “Captain America: Civil War” — $1.153 billion
While the Marvel hit is probably going to be toppled from the throne by ‘Rogue One’ during this year, the latest title in the ‘Captain America’ franchise is still on the top of the highest-grossing movie lists. It earned $408 million domestically and over $700 billion worldwide.
