It’s only been out a few days, but the live-action adaptation of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast starring Emma Watson and Dan Stevens as the title roles has already smashed five box office records. That’s pretty impressive going!
“This is such a beloved property,” Beauty and the Beast‘s producer David Hoberman told The Hollywood Reporter.
“And in such a time of uncertainty in this country, and all over the world, I think this movie gives people a sense of joy and comfort.”
So far, the film has earned $170 million at the US box office alone, and $350 million globally. The film currently holds the title for the biggest domestic and international opening in history, beating the record set by Disney’s Finding Nemo sequel, Finding Dory, last year.
The movie holds the seventh biggest opening in history – just behind the final Harry Potter film which holds the sixth spot.
This is a brand new record for Disney too, as Beauty and the Beast has become its highest debuting live-action remake. It even beat Alice in Wonderland‘s, which had a staggering $116.1 million opening.
Will the next live-action Disney remake be able to top this? It has some pretty big shoes to fill, but we aren’t ruling it out as they seem to be getting bigger and better with time!
We’re excited for what the future holds!
