Emily Ratajkowski faces criticism for her Kérastase advert comments

Seems like celebs have to choose their words very carefully on social media these days.

Having just been revealed as the new face (and hair) of Kérastase Paris, Emily Ratajkowski thought she would share her exciting news with her fans on Instagram… but things didn’t quite go the way she had hoped.

“Hair is a fundamental part of beauty, femininity, and identity”

“Hair is a fundamental part of beauty, femininity, and identity,” she wrote on Instagram, underneath a black and white picture of her debut advert (pictured above).

“So excited to announce that I am the new face of @kerastase_official!”

However, the beginning part of her caption seemed to upset quite a lot of people, and the model soon received criticism from women around the world – in particular, those who had suffered from hair loss…

“Fundamental was truly not the right word, and to those of you who have lost your hair due to cancer and other causes just know this post is wrong and you are beautiful without it”

“Fundamental was truly not the right word, and to those of you who have lost your hair due to cancer and other causes just know this post is wrong and you are beautiful without it,” wrote one follower.

“It doesn’t determine your identity or your femininity.”

Although many other women jumped to Emily and the brand’s defence, Kérastase has issued its own apology for anyone who took offence…

“We are deeply sorry about that, we didn’t want to cause any harm to anyone with the caption,” Kérastase wrote in a comment on Instagram.

“Of course beauty is not defined by your hair, beauty is something more spiritual, beauty is an attitude coming from inside each of us. Our new muse, Emily, thinks that her hair is a way to express herself.

“As she said, ‘Everyone is uniquely beautiful in their own way; and we agree. We apologise for the misunderstanding of our previous caption because it seems like we were making a one-way statement, forgetting the rest of the multiple variations of beauty.

“We honestly tell you we’re very sorry and thanks for your testimony because through it we are learning everyday.”

To do extra damage control, Emily amended her original caption, which now reads:

“So excited to announce that I am the new face of @kerastase_official ! Welcome good hair days.”

Phew! Trying to please everyone can be exhausting…
