“I am no coward” – Serena Williams addresses those Ilie Nastase racist comments

Serena Williams has addressed the racist comment made by Romanian tennis captain Ilie Nastase about the colour of her unborn baby’s skin.

The International Tennis Federation launched an investigation into the incident – which Serena fully supports – after he was heard to have said, “let’s see what colour it has. Chocolate with milk?” about the baby she is expecting with her fiance, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian.

“It disappoints me to know we live in a society where people like Ilie Nastase can make such racist comments towards myself and unborn child, and sexist comments against my peers,” Serena Williams said.

“This or anything else will not stop me from pouring love, light and positivity into everything that I do. I will continue to take a lead and stand up for what’s right.”

“I am not afraid unlike you,” she said in a comment addressed to Ilie Nastase. “You see, I am no coward.

“Does my sassiness upset you? Why are you beset with gloom? You may shoot me with your words… you may try to kill me with your hatefulness, but still like the air, I rise.”

Ending her statement with a powerful Maya Angelou quote was genius!
