“I’m a risk taker” – Fergie responds to national anthem controversy

Fergie sang the national anthem on Sunday night – and to say her performance was controversial would be a huge understatement!

The singer performed the national anthem at the NBA All-Star game on Sunday night, but her rendition of Star Spangled Banner was met with quite a lot of controversy, with the internet branding it as “one of the worst” renditions of all time.

This All Star opening is confusing me. WTF is going on? Anyone?

Literally dying at these reactions. Fergie with the worst rendition ever. Embiid

Everyone who saw Fergie sing the National Anthem please look directly into your phone.

You’re welcome

Fergie didn’t give us the national anthem we needed or wanted to hear, but she did give us the national anthem we all deserve in 2018. #NBAAllStar2018

And it wasn’t just the internet, as Chance the Rapper, Joel Embiid, Draymond Green and Jimmy Kimmel – who were all at the game – were spotted grimacing during the entire performance. Ouch!

However, Fergie has defended her performance, saying that she took an artistic risk and tried her best to make her country proud…

“I’ve always been honoured and proud to perform the national anthem, and last night I wanted to try something special for the NBA,” she told E! News following the backlash.

“I’m a risk taker artistically, but clearly this rendition didn’t strike the intended tone.

“I love this country and honestly tried my best”.

And to her defence – the one and only Shaquille O’Neal apparently LOVED her performance, branding it “different” and “sexy”.

“Oh, stop, don’t do that. Leave my Fergie alone,” he said.

“Fergie, I love you. It was different, it was sexy.”

So she has at least one fan!

Take a look at the video below – if you dare – to see what the internet is talking about.

Is it really as bad as everyone said it was?
