People will remember the 2017 Golden Globe Awards for many great moments, like Donald Glover’s “Atlanta” winning in the category for “Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy,” but it will also be remembered for Jimmy Fallon’s excellent opening monologue.
The talk-show host decided to recreate the opening scene of “La La Land” for his introduction. Everything looked magnificent, until the teleprompter broke. Fallon, however, didn’t seem that panicked. He humorously said: “Welcome to the Golden Globes. Already the teleprompter is down. This is a great way to start the show. I can do impressions. What do we do here? I can think of something. Cut to Justin Timberlake, please. Just wink at me or something.”
“Yeah. This is great. We have another monitor coming in. You know what, I’ll make up this monologue. We’re here, this is what happens at the Golden Globes already. Already you have your Golden Globes moment. Already. It’s like a gift. I’m happy I didn’t trip. Here we go,” Fallon said to the audience, trying to keep his cool while waiting for another monitor to be brought in.
Following the first commercial break, Fallon jokingly addressed the previously mentioned issue, by saying: “Welcome back, everybody, welcome back. Thank you. I just got off the phone with Mariah Carey and she thinks Dick Clark productions sabotaged my monologue.” This without a doubt made his monologue the first highlight of the ceremony!
