We don’t think Kendall Jenner or Pepsi knew how much backlash their latest ’Live For Now’ commercial would receive…
The offending part of the commercial comes when Kendall Jenner offers a policeman a can of Pepsi as a peace offering during a protest.
The reason this has offended so many people is because of the similarities it shared with the Black Lives Matter movement.
28-year-old Ieshia Evans famously confronted policemen at Baton Rouge in Louisiana while protesting the fatal police shooting of Alton Sterling, and the Pepsi campaign insensitively echoes that poignant moment that will go down in history.
While Pepsi hasn’t directly addressed the similarities between the real life protest, or the controversy, it has tried to make everyone see what message it was trying to get across…
“This is a global ad that reflects people from different walks of life coming together in a spirit of harmony, and we think that’s an important message to convey,” the brand told Entertainment Weekly.
“The creative showcases a moment of unity, and a point where multiple storylines converge in the final advert,” Pepsi said in a separate interview with Teen Vogue.
“It depicts various groups of people embracing a spontaneous moment, and showcasing Pepsi’s brand rallying cry to ‘Live For Now,’ in an exploration of what that truly means to live life unbounded, unfiltered and uninhibited.”
Regardless of Pepsi’s motives, it’s easy to see why people are up in arms about it.
Are you as offended as everyone else? Or do you see what Pepsi was trying to convey?
