Kim Kardashian faces backlash over “Bo Derek braids”

Another day, another drama for Kim Kardashian.

The reality TV star – who welcomed her third child into the world a few weeks ago – has received a lot of criticism after revealing a new braided hairstyle which she said was inspired by Bo Derek’s hair in the 1979 film, 10.

“So guys, I did Bo Derek braids, and I’m really into it,” she said about her new look.

Fans and non-fans alike took to social media to criticise her look, and accused her of cultural appropriation.

Interestingly, many Twitter users weren’t offended by the hairdo itself, but by the way in which Kim described it – especially as the hairdo should have been credited to the Fulani people of East and West Africa, and not to Bo Derek…

@Maddii_Sun

“@KimKardashian you look very cute with the braids…. but you need to realize they were #FulaniBraids before they were Bo Derek’s….. the lack of appreciation for this iconic black culture look is why they call you a culture vulture. #comeon”

@Bothsides_now

“Stop calling black women sensitive bc we’re angry that Kim Kardashian continuously appropriates our hairstyles. Black women have been fired for rocking cornrows at work. The Kardashians wear our culture like a costume, get credit & then throw it off when it’s convenient for them.”

@TaliNaidoo1

“I’m confused why Kim K can’t acknowledge black culture when she copies it nonstop. She called them “Boderrick braids” when they are clearly cornrows/Fulani braids. Just respect/understand/acknowledge the culture (whatever it is) when you represent it.”

@thejournalista

“You are raising black daughters, so you need to do a better job of respecting the culture @KimKardashian”

@MarieRNSkincare

“The hairstyle Bo Derek wore was the way many Black Women wore their Hair in the 70’s way before Bo Derek’s stylist was inspired by these women to do the style. The point is Give Credit where it’s due. Pics of these Braids are seen all over social Media on Black girls these days”

@HoodSocialist

“It’s not cultural appreciation when Kim Kardashian fights tooth & nail to avoid crediting the Black women who inspire her looks/aesthetic/hairstyles. It’s a form of erasure & it is racist as hell. She doesn’t want to credit Black women because she envies us. & I am over it.”

Lindsay Lohan also weighed in on the scandal with a simple, “I am confused” Tweet.

Kim fired back in a very feisty way, writing:

“You know what’s confusing…your sudden foreign accent”.

Kim was of course referring to Li-Lo’s confusing accent at a club opening in Greece back in 2016.

Although Kim hasn’t responded to the backlash directly, fans think that her recent “Hi, can I get zero fucks please, thanks” post is in reference to this.

Although given the controversy that surrounds the Kardashian family, it could very well be in reference to something else, including a topless picture she recently shared which raised a few eyebrows.

Your guess is as good as ours!
