The Cannes Film Festival red carpet is famous for its highly glamorous dress code. There’s no such thing as “too overdressed” when it comes to the Cannes red carpet… but there is, on the other hand, such a thing as “too underdressed”.
The dress code has been pretty strict in the past– back in 2015 the film festival even made it a requirement for all female guests to wear high heels! – but that hasn’t stopped a few celebs from trying their hand at sartorial rebellion.
And judging by some of the looks we have seen this year, we have a feeling that the Cannes dress code might slowly be moving with the times and accepting more casual looks…
Kristen Stewart, a famous advocate of flat shoes on the red carpet, stepped out in quite an interesting Chanel dress and Le Silla heels for a premiere on Saturday night. Not the most Cannes-worthy outfit we must admit, but we definitely think she made it work for her.
As good as she looked in her Chanel outfit, the actress wants everyone to know that she made that sartorial decision because she WANTED to, not because she HAD to. Kristen Stewart is not one for following the rules!
“There’s definitely a distinct dress code, right,” she told The Hollywood Reporter. “People get very upset if you don’t wear heels, but I feel that you can’t ask people that anymore. It’s just a given. If you’re not asking guys to wear heels and a dress, you can’t ask me either.
“Even four years ago, it was not even a question: you have to wear a dress,” she said.
“But now, it’s awesome. You can’t do that anymore!”
We’ll say! We wouldn’t be surprised to find her walk the red carpet in flat shoes one day. If anyone is going to break the rules and get away with it, it’s probably going to be K-Stew!
We’ll be keeping a close eye on her this year…
