Meryl Streep, Viola Davis and La La Land make Oscars history

A lot of Oscars history was made, yesterday.

The Academy Awards nominations were revealed yesterday, and there have been a lot of record-breaking and history-making things to take note of.

First of all, Meryl Streep, i.e. the actress that President Donald Trump deemed “overrated”, received her 20th Oscar nomination for Florence Foster Jenkins… which undoubtedly makes her the most Oscar-nominated actress of all time. What an achievement!

Secondly, this is the first year in Oscar history that three black women were nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category, as Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer and Naomie Harris received nods for their respective roles in Fences, Hidden Figures, and Moonlight.

We hope this is for their remarkable talent and not a smart move from the Academy to make up for last year’s “all white” ceremony which caused many actors to boycott it altogether.

Viola Davis also gets another mention, as this makes her the first ever black actress to receive three Oscars nominations. She won the Golden Globe for her role in Fences, so we’re quietly confident that she’ll win the Oscar, too!

And thirdly, La La Land received 14 (yes, you read that right, 14!) nominations, which ties with Titanic and All About Eve, the only other two films to receive that many nods in Oscars history.

It’s going to be one heck of a ceremony – we can’t wait to see who walks away with the coveted golden statues!

See below for the full list of Oscars nominations.
