The former film mogul Harvey Weinstein was given the boot by the motion picture academy today, literally. During an emergency meeting on Saturday, Oscar’s luminaries, including big names like Steven Spielberg or Tom Hanks decided to end Harvey Weinstein’s reign in Hollywood, officially speaking, as they’ve expelled him from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which makes for Hollywood’s governing body.
This somewhat radical move came in the aftermath of the mounting allegations (what happened to the presumption of innocence by the way?) of assault and sexual harassment against Harvey Weinstein. As the former film mogul who basically re-wrote the rules of Oscar campaigning was removed from Hollywood’s ranks, the official statement reads:
“We do so not simply to separate ourselves from someone who does not merit the respect of his colleagues but also to send a message that the era of willful ignorance and shameful complicity in sexually predatory behavior and workplace harassment in our industry is over. What’s at issue here is a deeply troubling problem that has no place in our society. The Board continues to work to establish ethical standards of conduct that all Academy members will be expected to exemplify.”
The Oscar’s board of governors decided to banish Harvey Weinstein following a series of articles in the New York Times and the New Yorker, articles which depicted rape allegations and sexual harassment against the film mogul going back 3 decades or more. The academy vote on banishing Weinstein was in excess of the two-thirds majority required by the rules:
The film academy’s 54-member board of governors, which includes such industry luminaries as Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks, Kathleen Kennedy and Whoopi Goldberg, voted in an emergency meeting on Saturday morning to remove Weinstein from the organization’s ranks in an unprecedented public rebuke of a prominent industry figure. The move marked the latest blow in Weinstein’s stunning downfall and, in symbolic terms, amounts to a virtual expulsion from Hollywood itself.
This is quite shocking for the 8400 member academy, because these are the same guys (give or take a few) who embraced the convicted pedophile rapist back in the day, and I am talking about Roman Polanski, who pleaded guilty in a sex-crime involving a thirteen year old girl.
