Today’s news is pretty awkward for those of us, chickens, who are using sleeping pills on a daily basis. While it’s basically a no-brainer that sleeping pills are not like vitamins for your health, not by a long shot, the bad news is that according to a very recent scientific study, sleeping pills have devastating effects over one’s well-being if used on a regular basis.
Think along the lines of a one pack of cigarettes a day and you’ll be close to “how bad the situation really is”. The thing is, about a third of Americans have problems sleeping for various reasons and don’t get enough sleep. And sleep deprivation is a silent killer in itself. If you don’t have enough sleep, i.e. if you suffer from (diagnosed) insomnia, well, you are not alone.
However, according to experts, sleeping pills are hardly a long term solution, as they come associated with huge health risks. According to a lead researcher at Arizona State University, Shawn Youngstedt respectively:
“Sleeping pills are extremely hazardous. They are as bad as smoking a pack of cigarettes a day. Not to mention they cause infections, falling and dementia in the elderly, and they lose their effectiveness after a few weeks.”
However, there’s some good news for you, insomniacs out there. According to another scientific study, you can reduce insomnia by simply exercising/working out/taking long walks or whatever.
The study conducted by clinical psychologist Kelly Glazer Baron at Rush University found that senior citizens suffering from insomnia saw significant improvements in the quality of sleep after exercising. The improvements included more energy, better sleep patterns and less depression.
Physical exercise is also great for people suffering of sleep apnea and restless leg syndrome. Insufficient sleep can lead to very serious problems, being linked to various chronic conditions and cardio-vascular disease. The CDC recommends at least 2 hours and 30 minutes of exercise per week, but these are rookie numbers in this racket, you’ll gotta pump those numbers up!
