CNN’s boss Jeff Zucker is reportedly asking the Federal Government to investigate what he describes as Internet monopolies, i.e. Google and Facebook. Zucker’s rebellion comes amid a number of media organizations announcing they’re tightening their so-called digital paywalls in the aftermath of falling (internet) advertising revenue. The thing is, the internet is completely dominated in terms of advertising by these 2 tech behemoths, Google and Facebook, which made it harder for news organizations and “private”/small content creators alike to monetize content posted on their platforms. According to Jeff Zucker, regulators should pay attention to what’s happening on the Internet, especially when it comes to mega mergers and acquisitions, such as the proposed merger of Time Warner and AT&T, to give just one example.
Let’s see CNN’s boss remarks made while attending a conference in Spain:
“In a Google and Facebook world, monetization of digital and mobile continues to be more difficult than we would have expected or liked. I think we need help from the advertising world and from the technology world to find new ways to monetize digital content, otherwise good journalism will go away.”
Jeff Zucker described (pretty accurately) Google and Facebook to be de-facto monopolies, with their almost complete control over advertising markets being “the issue of the century” facing the media industry:
“Everyone is looking at whether these combinations of AT&T and Time Warner or Fox and Disney pass government approval and muster, the fact is nobody for some reason is looking at these monopolies that are Google and Facebook. That’s where the government should be looking, and helping to make sure everyone else survives. I think that’s probably the biggest issue facing the growth of journalism in the years ahead.”

Hey Jeff, as per your “find new way to monetize news content” claim: how about bringing back journalism? It is dead in America today. Perhaps you could start a trend! Also, what do you mean, “good journalism will go away”? You work at CNN for Christ’s sake, from where good journalism went away a long, long time ago! Why do you think the government should help you figure out how to succeed in your business? Reporting just what happened and letting the people make their own interpretation would go a long way in helping you succeed.
This is America: opportunity, not outcome, is guaranteed and the government is not supposed to pick winners or losers, but to ensure a level playing field. Got it? Correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t CNN calling on Google/YouTube to outright ban channels like Milo,InfoWars and other “illegitimate alt-right outlets” that have these group-think -pushing leftists terrified?
