According to a Tuesday statement via Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, her department has inquired federal prosecutors about the possibility of bringing criminal charges against sanctuary city leaders who refuse to enforce federal immigration laws and to cooperate with the administration’s deportation efforts. Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen has told the Senate Judiciary Committee:
“The Department of Justice is reviewing what avenues may be available,”
The news about a DHS crackdown on sanctuary states leaders are coming after California passed and enforced legislation on January 1, which severely restricts cooperation of the state/localities with federal immigration law enforcement and turns California into a de-facto sanctuary state. For further reference, read this: California Set to Become Full Sanctuary State.
ICE director Tom Homan was quoted as saying that California’s new laws put local communities and Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers at more risk than before, as they’ll now have to arrest illegal immigrants out in the community.
Controlling our immigration is specifically stated in the Constitution as a Federal power. Individual states purposely trying to obstruct the Federal government from enforcing Federal immigration law isn’t a state’s rights issue. State’s rights do not supersede the Constitution, otherwise California would have banned guns a long time ago. Now, if you ask me, every city and state official who supports sanctuary cities is guilty of harboring fugitives. It’s quite simple.
These people are protecting criminals because of their potential impact on future voting. That’s the kind of amoral sentiment the left harbors. This has nothing to do with humanitarian concern or equality/racism. It’s all about votes.
