During a Tuesday presser, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders contradicted mainstream media reports claiming that special counsel Robert Mueller has subpoenaed President Trump’s Deutsche Bank records. Handelsblatt, who first broke the news about the respective subpoena, claimed that Deutsche Bank was requested by Mueller’s team to provide the investigators with details of documents and transactions pertaining to President Trump and his family members, as the probe into the now-forgotten Russia collusion is now turning its attention to the POTUS’ bank accounts. Deutsche Bank is a German, not a Russian bank, but let that go.
As per a Bloomberg piece:
“the news comes as Mueller’s investigation appears to be entering a new phase, with Trump’s former national security adviser, Michael Flynn, pleading guilty Friday to lying to FBI agents, becoming the fourth associate of the president ensnared by Mueller’s probe. More significantly, he also is providing details to Mueller about the Trump campaign’s approach to Flynn’s controversial meeting with a Russian envoy during the presidential transition.”
A few months ago, back in June, Deutsche Bank rejected a request from US officials to provide them with information of its relationship/dealings with Donald Trump, deeming the release of information illegal short of receiving a subpoena, i.e. a formal request. The German bank has a 2-decade long business relationship with Donald Trump and has lent hundreds of millions of dollars to the Trump Organization during these years. White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said on Tuesday:
“We confirmed that the news reports [that] the special counsel had subpoenaed financial records related to the president are completely false. No subpoena has been issued or received. We have confirmed this with the bank and other sources. I think this is another example of the media going too far and too fast and we don’t see it going in that direction.
“I’m not going to get into hypothetical situations and try to determine everything that could happen. We know it hasn’t happened up until this point and that the reports out were totally false and again the media got ahead of their skis a little bit pushing and driving that story that wasn’t true.”
