Is Israel Trying to Ignite a Full Scale War with Syria and Iran?

In what Reuters described as a major escalation of tension in the region, Israel’s IDF spokesperson confirmed that Israeli airforce carried out, let me quote, a “large scale attack” inside Syria on Saturday, performing at least 12 airstrikes on Iranian and Syrian military targets. IDF’s spokesperson basically confirmed that Israel and Syria are now in a state of open war, there’s no way around it.

Israel’s airforce repeatedly violated Syria’s sovereign airspace in the past, launching unprovoked attacks on Syrian army targets, yet Assad’s strategy was to not respond to Israel’s provocations, or at least that was the situation for 7 long years of civil war, that until Saturday, when the Syrian air defense shot down an Israeli F16 fighter jet in the Golan border region. Israel did not provide detailed intel about its downed F16 fighter, except from admitting the respective military aircraft was conducting attacks on targets in Syria. Israel blamed Iran for the downing of their plane, by tweeting that “Iran is responsible for this severe violation of Israeli sovereignty.”

The 2 pilots in the downed F16 managed to eject and landed inside Israel. One of them suffered serious injuries  due to the emergency ejection from the plane. Here’s video footage with the Israeli pilots ejecting in Galilee.

Al Masdar News reported that the Israeli F16 was shot while flying in Syrian airspace near the country’s capital Damascus, at approximately 6.30 a.m. on Saturday.

Israel’s version of events was that their aircraft targeted Iranian UAV control-systems on Syrian territory after an Iranian made drone (UAV) entered Israeli airspace, violating Israeli sovereignty (that’s ironic considering how Israel was rolling in Syria during the civil war).

Following the downing of their military jet, Israel fired missiles targeting an Iranian based near Damascus, in the Al-Kiswah area, and then performed another retaliation strike shortly after, on a Syrian army base, also in Al-Kiswah area. Casualties were reported among Iranian and Syrian army forces:

A Syria war monitor says Israel has struck targets in central Syria and the southwestern suburbs of the capital Damascus in two separate and successive waves of airstrikes.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says the first round targeted in the central desert area where Syrian troops and their Iranian-backed allies including Hezbollah are known to maintain bases. It cited unconfirmed reports of casualties among Syrian government forces and allied militiamen.

The Britain-based Observatory, which monitors the Syria war through a network of activists on the ground, says the second round targeted outposts in the southwestern suburbs of Damascus

As per Syrian state-run SANA:

The army air defense confronted a new Israeli aggression on one of the military positions in the central area and hit more than one aircraft…

Moreover, the Army air defense confronted another Israeli aggression on Damascus Countryside on Saturday morning…

Meanwhile, media of the Israeli enemy admitted that the Syrian air defense shot down an F-16 jet over Galilee in occupied Palestine and that its pilots were injured, confirming the closure of parts the Israeli airspace for aviation after downing the warplane.

The thing is, the Israeli airforce admitted striking targets inside Syria, thus violating the country’s sovereignty, at least one hundred times over the 7 years of conflict, and Syria protested many times before the United Nations, but to no avail. On the other hand, Iranian operatives are in Syria at the request of the Syrian government (just like the Russians).

According to the Wall Street Journal, Israel secretly/covertly supported Al Qaeda linked groups in Syria, aid which consisted in weapons transfers and treatment of wounded soldiers/jihadists in Israeli hospitals, basically getting in bed with ISIS/Al Qaeda (sunni) terrorists in order to fight Iran (shia), which is a very dangerous game by any metrics.

The downing of an Israeli F16 has the potential to ignite the whole region, as now Israel has its long sought motive to justify airstrikes on Iranian military assets in Syria, while at the same time is working hard at destabilizing/undermining Assad’s government.
