Is New HHS Secretary Going To Abolish Obamacare?

Price likely to be key player in negotiations with Congress over how to replace Obamacare

President-elect Donald Trump has picked Rep. Tom Price (R-GA) as next Health and Human Services Secretary (HHS). The reports from The Washington Post and CNBC suggest that Price may replace the Affordable Care Act or Obamacare with a new plan.

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), commonly known as the Affordable Care Act or Obamacare, was enacted by President Barack Obama in March 2010.

According to a report from The Washington Post on Monday, Trump intends to name Price to lead HHS, which oversees Medicare, Medicaid, and the Affordable Care Act. Price currently serves as House Budget Chair.

Trump Looks Dead Serious About Dismantling Obamacare

Trump’s intention to appoint Price as HHS Secretary shows that President-elect is dead serious about getting rid of the Affordable Care Act.

Price is the author of the Empowering Patients First Act, which is regarded as one of the most thorough and detailed proposals to replace Obamacare.

The Affordable Care Act may be replaced with the Empowering Patients First Act that does more to benefit the young, healthy, and rich. The Price’s blueprint, according to the report, disadvantages the sick, old, and poor.

Price’s plan provides significantly less help to people with pre-existing conditions than other Republican proposals. The plan calls for full repeal of the Medicaid expansion, a program currently covering millions of low-income Americans.

Price has a detailed plan which is 242-pages long. It lays bare exactly how to repeal Obamacare.

Like Obamacare, the Empowering Patients plan requires insurance plans to offer coverage to any patient regardless of how sick they are. But unlike Obamacare, the Price’s plan would allow insurers to charge sick people more if they did not maintain “continuous coverage.”

According to the report from CNBC, if Price is appointed as HHS Secretary, he won’t get the authority to replace Obamacare himself. Nevertheless, Price will be a key player in negotiations with Congress over how to replace Obamacare.

But picking Price – who is a knowledgeable and well-prepared opponent of Obamacare – to lead HHS, Trump is signaling isn’t Obamacare fan and is very serious about dismantling the act.
