It Begins: Google, YouTube Get Sued Over Free Speech Censorship By Conservative Educational Nonprofit

PragerU sues google, youtube

Dennis Prager is a well known conservative radio host and the founder of PragerU, a man who’s had enough with internet censorship by corporate monopolies and he decided to sue both YouTube and its parent company Google over alleged free speech censorship of PragerU’s educational videos.

The lawsuit was filed on Monday and it says:

YouTube’s more than 30 million visitors a day make the site so elemental to free speech in the digital age that it should be treated as a public forum.”

Dennis Prager’s lawsuit argues that YouTube should respect free speech instead of censoring content (one way or another, including demonetization) at its own discretion, adding that PragerU saw many of its educational videos limited by YouTube’s censors, without being provided with a clear and transparent criteria explaining why YouTube is infringing on PragerU’s First Amendment rights.

PragerU was censored repeatedly on Google’s YouTube platform, with many of its political videos getting labeled as “restricted adult content”, while a video depicting a Muslim man explaining how he was radicalized and turned anti-semitic was branded as hate-speech by YouTube’s censors and removed altogether from the platform. YouTube blamed community flagging for their censorship of PragerU (and many others) after being criticized for deleting/restricting content.

YouTube, Google, Twitter and the like are just moving onward to having themselves regulated like the telecommunications monopolies they are. Every day, little by little, we can see the tide turning.

I think Dennis Prager is right. If the likes of You Tube, Facebook and Twitter are just technology companies offering users a forum, as they claim, then they have no business censoring any content, which is otherwise legal. That IS an infringement of the First Amendment. If Dennis Prager takes this all the way to the Supreme Court and wins, it will be a significant victory for free speech.

Most liberals will scream monopoly over very non-monopolistic endeavors, but when you have a real anti-trust problem with leftist organizations, they defend the hell out of them. Google search is an information monopoly. Some of their content groups (including internet ads) are there, or pretty close, as well. If content platforms like Google Search and Youtube, or Facebook are deemed to be public forums due to their inherent intertwining with the national political discourse, they would be subject to regulation and could be sued for engaging in viewpoint discrimination.

Interestingly, this is a mirror image of the Christian baker refusing to bake a cake celebrating a gay “marriage”. This precedent cuts both ways. If bakers and florists and caterers can be drug through the streets and pilloried, so can Google and YouTube and Twitter.

Whether that will happen is anyone’s guess, but the hypocrisy is stunning.
