After Saudi Arabia’s chaotic weekend, which included a shocking and aggressive purge of the royal family together with various high officials, a missile attack on the capital from Yemen and the deaths of two Saudi princes in a helicopter crash, now we have a historic declaration from the Saudi Gulf affairs minister Thamer al-Sabhan, who released a statement that accuses Lebanon of declaring war against the kingdom.
The Saudi Gulf affairs minister Thamer al-Sabhan’s bizarre statement claims that since the Lebanese Shi‘ite group Hezbollah keeps attacking the kingdom, that means Lebanon had literally declared war to Saudi Arabia. The exact quote reads:
[the attacks from Hezbollah]“were considered acts of a declaration of war against Saudi Arabia by Lebanon and by the Lebanese Party of the Devil”.
Saudi Arabia also accused Iran of sowing the seeds of unrest in the region, yet it’s not clear how Lebanon declared war on Saudi Arabia since they don’t even share a common border, nor it formally declared war. It looks like the KSA’s official statement is driven by the fear of Hezbollah, which morphed into a real power-house in the Middle East, and it also resembles the Islamic State, as Hezbollah transformed into a quasi state that has gained respect of both Arabs and Lebanese across the region. Saudi Arabia are not the only ones fearing Hezbollah’s growing influence in the Middle East and its progressively broad legitimacy and acceptance within Lebanon’s state institutions.
The same holds true for Israel, who increased its bellicose rhetoric against Hezbollah lately, and has once again took the side of Saudi Arabia in their war against Hezbollah. Both Saudi Arabia and Israel are trying to suppress the Shia crescent, which is their main goal in the region. And this unholy alliance will most probably place Lebanon in the middle of yet another Hezbollah-Israel war, but this time the war will involve the KSA, which makes things worse for all parties.
Looks like a full-on, Sunni-Shiite civil war is going to break out in the Middle East. It’ll be a good time to own American fracking company stock, isn’t it?
