Pope Francis Calls on Europe to Take More Migrants, Compares Them to ‘Joseph and Mary’

pope calls for more migrants

Pope Francis asked the world’s Catholics to try to understand the issue of mass immigration, with an emphasis on the European Union migrant crisis, arguing that “refugees” are driven from their countries due to their leaders who are ready to shed innocent blood, or something along these lines. Afterwards, the Pope made a very forced comparison between Joseph and Mary vs 2017’s refugees. However, the Pope failed to mention that Joseph and Mary were not refugees at all, as they traveled to Bethlehem to obey the Roman government’s order, i.e to register for census. It’s strange that the Pope doesn’t know these things, with the Christmas and all.

Mary and Joseph were not refugees at all. The holy family stayed in Nazareth until King Herod issued that famous order with regard to killing all newborn male children, due to the rumor that the Messiah was born. Thus King Herod tried to play a dirty trick and eliminate competition for power, hence Joseph and Mary tried to escape Herod’s decree and departed temporarily to Egypt, that was also part of the Roman Empire. When it was safe, the family returned to Nazareth.

These subtleties seem to have escaped Pope Francis on Sunday, when during the Christmas Eve Mass at the Vatican called on the West to take in an unspecified number of “additional immigrants”, arguing that Mary and Joseph’s situation was similar to Europe’s refugee crisis:

“So many other footsteps are hidden in the footsteps of Joseph and Mary. We see the tracks of entire families forced to set out in our own day. We see the tracks of millions of persons who do not choose to go away, but driven from their land, leave behind their dear ones,”

What this Pope needs is a reality check. His judgement is way off.
