President Donald Trump vowed on Friday to end the Iran nuclear deal himself if the do-nothing Congress will not act. He also said that he will no longer certify Iran’s rogue regime (an Islamic theocracy) compliance with the 2015 nuclear agreement.
The Donald presented a long list of complaints and promised to cancel Barack Obama’s infamous nuclear deal with Tehran himself, provided the US Congress and America’s allies don’t act in a timely fashion for addressing his concerns with regard to the accord. President Trump has said during a speech at the White House:
“Iran is under the control of a fanatical regime, and it spread death, destruction and chaos all around the globe.”
President Trump condemned Iran’s rulers and he detailed his grievances against the Islamic theocracy going back to 1979, when Iran went through an Islamic revolution:
“Iranian aggression continues to this day. The regime remains the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism.”
The POTUS must tell Congress every ninety days if Iran is complying with the 2015 nuclear agreement, as per a law which gives the Congress oversight of the respective nuclear deal. If the POTUS doesn’t certify the fact that Iran is complying, US lawmakers have 60 days to consider whether to reimpose economic sanctions on Iran under expedited consideration.
Basically, president Trump didn’t cancel the deal per se, but he declared that Iran was not living up to the deal. Iran will cancel the deal for him since he didn’t certify they were in compliance. So the deal is effectively dead without Trump cancelling it outright. The ball is in Congress’ court now.
The thing is, the Iran nuclear deal should have always been in the hands of the Senate, that is where treaties are ratified as per our Constitution. And yes, this makes for another one of Obama’s illegal deeds that needs to be corrected. Following the POTUS’ announcement, an Iranian general, deputy Quds commander Brigadier-General Esmail Ghaani respectively has said:
“We are not a war-mongering country. But any military action against Iran will be regretted … Trump’s threats against Iran will damage America … We have buried many … like Trump and know how to fight against America,”
