Pyongyang Warns That South Korea-US Drills May Lead to Nuclear War

The rogue North Korean regime threatened (again) on Sunday with a merciless nuclear strike as the joint military war-games between South Korea and US are set to begin on Monday. Japan takes the Pyongyang warnings very seriously, i.e. its coastal towns are already holding mass evacuation drills. North Korea described the war-games as “reckless behavior driving the situation into the uncontrollable phase of a nuclear war.”

The annual military drills between the United States and South Korean armies have been blasted by Pyongyang as an explicit expression of hostility, voicing dear leader’s concerns that the Ulchi Freedom Guardian may evolve into actual fighting. According to the US State Department, the annual military drills are aimed at enhancing readiness and to maintain stability in the region whilst protecting the Korean peninsula against any threats.

However, the North Korean regime is obviously not buying that premise. An editorial in North Korea’s official newspaper Rodong Sinmun reads:

“The joint exercise is the most explicit expression of hostility against us, and no one can guarantee that the exercise won’t evolve into actual fighting,”“If the United States is lost in a fantasy that war on the peninsula is at somebody else’s door far away from them across the Pacific, it is far more mistaken than ever,”

North Korea sees the US pushing with its military exercises as a clear sign of provocation which adds fuel to the fire instead of calming things down:

“The Trump group’s declaration of the reckless nuclear war exercises against the DPRK [Democratic People’s Republic of Korea] … is a reckless behavior driving the situation into the uncontrollable phase of a nuclear war,”

The US should pay heed to the statement of the DPRK government that we would not rule out the use of any final means,”“Reckless and wild acts of the US can accelerate its final ruin,”

China has asked both Pyongyang and Washington to tone down the bellicose rhetoric via an editorial in Global Times, the Chinese communist party mouthpiece:

The drill will definitely provoke Pyongyang more, and Pyongyang is expected to make a more radical response,”

“If South Korea really wants no war on the Korean Peninsula, it should try to stop this military exercise.”
