On Tuesday, CNN published an article and posted videos suggesting that Russian government may be arming the Taliban in Afghanistan.
“We stated repeatedly that a disinformation campaign has been launched in the US media over alleged arming of Taliban by Russia and so on,” said Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova.
“CNN is a reliable propaganda tool in this game by the relevant US agencies,” she added.
The article said that the Taliban “have received improved weaponry in Afghanistan that appears to have been supplied by the Russian government”.
CNN acknowledged that “the videos don’t provide incontrovertible proof” that Moscow has been dealing with the Taliban. In the same article published by CNN, it was stated that there was little in the videos that could directly link the Russian state with weapons supplied to the Taliban.
The weapons were not particularly modern or rare, and even some of the more elaborate additions, like a JGBG M7 scope on one machine gun, were Chinese made and readily available online, they said.
Concluded the article, citing weapons experts from the Small Arms Survey who studied the videos.
