Senator “to quit” over Motel Child Sex Charge

According to his lawyer, an Oklahoma state senator will bow to the calls for his resignation after he was charged with several counts of child prostitution this month.

There have been repeated calls for Senator Ralph Shortey to quit after he was caught with a 17-year-old boy in a motel in Moore on March 9.

Mr. Shotey’s home was searched on Friday. FBI and Secret Service have also joined in the investigation.

The married father, who was first elected in 2010, remains a salaried, voting member of the state legislature. Even if he’s found guilty of child sex charges, he would still be able to collect his state retirement package.

The Oklahoma Senate voted unanimously last week to strip the 35-year-old of his privileges, including his office, assistant and parking space.

Unless formally expelled by his colleagues or convicted of a serious crime, Mr. Shortey is still able to vote on bills.

The lawmakers decided that additional steps need to be taken to remove the Oklahoma City Republican from the statehouse after a closed-door meeting on Monday.

The Chamber “reserves the right to take further action as necessary” and “continues to explore the available options” said Senate President pro tempore Mike Schulz on Monday.

Mr. Shortey will continue to draw his annual salary of $38,400 unless he steps down, is expelled or convicted.

Greg Mashburn, Cleveland County District Attorney charged the Senator last week of engaging in child prostitution, transporting a minor for prostitution, and engaging in prostitution within 1,000 feet of a church.
