“The Iconoclast General” Opted as National Security Adviser

Lt. Gen H.R. McMaster is recognized as a thoughtful and blunt military strategist.

President Trump has picked Lt. Gen H.R. McMaster nicknamed ‘The Iconoclast General” as his national security adviser.

Herbert Raymond McMaster – a lieutenant general with the US Army, had served in Iraq and Afghanistan on a government anti-corruption campaign.

Lt. Gen Michael Flynn’s cameo as the national security adviser came to an abrupt end after just three weeks and three days into the job.

Mr. McMaster is all set to hold the position stating:

“I’m grateful to you for that opportunity, and I look forward to joining the national security team and doing everything that I can to advance and protect the interests of the American people,”

Who is Lt. Gen H.R. McMaster?

Mr. Trump has acclaimed H.R. McMaster as “a man of tremendous talent and tremendous experience” who is “highly respected by everybody in the military.”

Lt. Gen H.R. McMaster, who holds a Ph.D. in U.S. History, is recognized as a thoughtful and blunt military strategist. He had served in the Persian Gulf War and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Way back in 1997, he wrote a book entitled “Dereliction of Duty” which was a thorough appraisal of the military officers in the Vietnam War. He criticized the military officers for not confronting the White House’s Vietnam Strategy. He discussed the principles of military responsibility to challenge civilian authorities when a war stratagem isn’t proceeding as expected.

In 2014, Times magazine named him among the 100 most influential people in the world stating that he might be the most distinguished war strategist of the 21st century.

Role of the National Security Adviser

A national security adviser serves as an independent adviser to the president regarding concerns of national security and foreign policy.

It’s one of the most high-ranking roles in the U.S. government. The influence of the role may vary, but generally, the adviser is one of the President’s vital intimates.

The adviser also acts as a coordinating arm between different government departments.

Why was his predecessor fired?

Lt. Gen Michael Flynn was fired after misguiding Vice-President Mr. Pence over his discourse with Russian ambassador to the U.S.

He was suspected of having discussed U.S. sanctions with Russia’s ambassador over the phone before being chosen as the national security adviser, and U.S. diplomacy conducted by private citizens is considered illicit.

President Trump wrote on his Twitter account later that the allegations of the intelligence leaks were the “real scandal.”

Mr. Flynn’s scandal provided an opportunity to the critics to hit President Trump’s administration, and they labeled it as muddled.

What were the other options besides Mr. McMaster?

Mr. Trump’s first choice for the position, retired Vice Admiral Robert Harward, declined the offer due to personal reasons.

Lt. Gen Robert Caslen and diplomat John Bolton were also under consideration for the position.

John Bolton served as the ambassador to the U.N. under George W Bush. Mr. Trump has assured that Mr. Bolton will serve his government “in another capacity.”
