The White House proposed a plan, which by the way is included in the 2019 budget, to modify the food-stamps program by delivering actual food items to welfare recipients instead of food stamps. By actual food, the program refers to, let me quote, “nutritious, U.S.-grown and produced food” in a “Harvest Box”. The EBT cards would not disappear, as the new program would still allow for half of the benefits to be placed on EBT cards, while the other half would consist in real food, to the tune of half of a recipient’s allotted benefits for the month.
The Trump administration’s “Harvest Box” was described by Budget Director Mick Mulvaneyas as a “Blue Apron-style program”, where welfare recipients would get actual food instead of cash vouchers. 81% of Snap beneficiaries would be affected by the new policy, and there are 16.4 million households currently enrolled in the Snap (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) program.
Here’s from the official statement of Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue:
USDA America’s Harvest Box is a bold, innovative approach to providing nutritious food to people who need assistance feeding themselves and their families — and all of it is homegrown by American farmers and producers. It maintains the same level of food value as SNAP [Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program] participants currently receive, provides states flexibility in administering the program, and is responsible to the taxpayers.
According to USDA estimates, the new program would save $129.2 billion over the next decade, and it would also enhance the nutrition content of the program, while decreasing food stamp fraud.
The vice president for food assistance policy at the left-leaning Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, Stacy Dean respectively, criticized the program by saying:
“It’s a risky scheme that threatens families’ ability to put food on the table,”
and deplored over how much choice SNAP recipients would have in what types of food they would receive.
Progressives seem to be mad that people can’t trade the funds on an EBT card for beer and smokes anymore, or at least not as much as before. Where’s the fairness in that? Seriously speaking, this proposal sounds like a win-win. Of course, Democrats won’t allow that.
This idea of delivering food is brilliant. Any person with a brain would have to admit that it’s easily the best thing that ever happened to poor people. Not only will they be assured of getting nutritious food, but the ones without transportation, which the so-called liberals are always complaining about, will be taken care of.
But the most brilliant thing of all is that it will expose the total hypocrisy of the Food Stamp program, which ought to be entitled “Free Money to spend on Your Vices as Long as You Vote for Democrats”. Got to love President Trump: every time he does something or proposes something, it shows who the left truly are and what they are about: total frauds!
