The founder of Microsoft and incredibly nerdy looking billionaire Bill Gates, who is also the richest man on the planet, at least officially, warned the world on Wednesday about the dangers of a bioterrorist attack which may wipe out thirty million people.
Why thirty million people, you may ask? Well, it doesn’t matter, it’s a cool sounding number, isn’t it? So, after global warming which was supposed to kill all polar bears and drown Malibu by 2014, now we must worry about bioterrorism. And of course, those islamic terrorists just received the best idea in the world for their next attack, i.e. spreading deadly pathogens would be great (according to Bill Gates), as they’re easier than ever to create/buy/spread around.
Bill Gates offered the world his catastrophic view about the future of terrorism during a speech at the Royal United Services Institute of London, a city with a heavy muslim population and an equally muslim mayor.
Microsoft’s daddy warned that an airborne lethal respiratory virus, let’s say smallpox, if launched in a densely populated urban area like, let’s say London (why not?) would be potentially more dangerous (as in lethal) than a nuclear strike (another great idea for a terrorist attack, right Bill?).
But let’s sip the wise words from the man himself:
“Bioterrorism is a much larger risk than a pandemic.
“All these advances in biology have made it far easier for a terrorist to recreate smallpox, which is a highly fatal pathogen, where there is essentially no immunity remaining at this point.
“When you are thinking about things that could cause in excess of 10 million deaths, even something tragic like a nuclear weapons incident wouldn’t get to that level. So the greatest risk is from a natural epidemic or an intentionally caused infection bioterrorism events.
“Whether the next epidemic is unleashed by a quirk of nature or the hand of terrorist, scientists say a fast-moving airborne pathogen could kill more than 30 million people in less than a year. So the world does need to think about this.”
So, let’s think about it together and wonder how on Earth those pesky terrorists failed to see the greatness and effectiveness of a bio-attack until now? They’ll have to remedy their primitive ways after Bill Gates’ speech, don’t you think?
Bill Gates also deplored how the advents of genetics and bio-engineering became dirt cheap and widely available, together with the widespread global travel:
“Something that is human-to-human respiratory that is like a measles or a flu or smallpox, that you need just one person on the bus or plane or the airport and you get huge things. A health crisis somewhere is a health crisis everywhere.
So the scariest thing is something like the 1919 flu which really spreads everywhere and because people are moving around more it’s easier for it to spread than back in 1919. If 1919 came back we have no immunity to that strain.”
I am still on the fence, I mean should I bet on a bioterrorist attack that will wipe out humanity or on Stephen Hawking’s AI revolution, Skynet going online and all that crazy stuff? What do you think?
