In what can be described as a stupid allocation of resources or how to hammer a nail using an electron microscope, a small $200 worth quadcopter drone was shot down using a 3 million dollars Patriot missile.
According to US General David Perkins speaking at a military symposium, the lucky strike (pun intended) was performed by a very close US Ally (I bet it was the Saudis, they enjoy burning money even more than Russian oligarchs).
I hope he was joking, but the US General said that the two hundred dollars Amazon available drone did not stand a chance against the high tech $3 million Patriot missile. Like, doh!
Patriot missiles are radar targeted and they were built and designed in the eighties for shooting down enemy missiles and aircraft. The general went on to saying in a very gung-ho fashion:
“Now, that worked, they got it, OK, and we love Patriot missiles,”
We all love Patriot missiles, yes indeed, but the general rule of thumb is that you’re going to lose a guerrilla war if you’re using highly expensive state of the art gear for fighting ninjas in pajamas, just ask the Soviets or look at the Vietnam war.
During the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, the US armed Taliban shot down million dollar targets (Soviet airplanes and helicopters) using MANPAD Sting missiles ($38,000 price tag) with the end result being the economic collapse of the USSR.
There have been many reports recently from Iraq and other places that ISIS terrorists are starting to using small commercial drones with weapons attached for attacking security forces.
General Perkins admitted that much, though he wasn’t sure (I wonder what history books these guys are reading):
“I’m not sure that’s a good economic exchange ratio,
In fact, if I’m the enemy, I’m thinking, ‘Hey, I’m just gonna get on eBay and buy as many of these $200 quadcopters as I can and expend all the Patriot missiles out there’.”
said the general to a flabbergasted audience in Alabama attending a symposium via the Association of the United States Army’s Global Force.
General Perkins did not provide further details about the whereabouts of the enormous overkill, as he just described the party that launch the Patriot missile as being a close ally of the United States.
A $3M Patriot missile can reach speeds of up to Mach 5 (5x speed of sound) while a $200 Amazon drone has a top speed of 50 miles per hour.
