Legendary Singer George Michael Dead at 53

If looks like 2016 simply won’t stop taking away our beloved celebrities. According to George Michael’s publicist, the singer passed away peacefully at home. His publicist issued a statement, which read “It is with great sadness that we can confirm our beloved son, brother and friend George passed away peaceful at home over the Christmas period. The family would ask that their privacy be respected at this difficult and emotional time. There will be no further comment at this stage.”

Michael was considered to be a pop superstar. His initial rise to fame is credited to the music duo Wham!, which he was a part of. The duo consisted of George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley. Despite only being active for 5 years, Wham! managed to sell more than 25 million records worldwide.

In 1986, George and Andrew went their separate ways. Andrew never managed to become as big of a superstar as Michael. George released his debut solo album in 1987, which sold over 20 million copies worldwide. Throughout his career, George sold more than 100 million records.

Thames Valley Police notes that George Michael’s death is currently being treated as unexplained but not suspicious. The police force said that “A post-mortem will be undertaken in due course. There will be no further updates from Thames Valley Police until the post-mortem has taken place.”
